Directus Unveils Marketplace – A Strategic Advance in CMS Extensibility

BROOKLYN, New York — March 4, 2024 — Directus recently announced the release of its Marketplace, a significant enhancement to its composable CMS. This launch introduces a new dimension in discovering and installing extensions across both cloud and self-hosted Directus projects.

The Directus Marketplace, which will be first rolled out in beta, signifies a strategic development in the company’s offerings, focusing on a user-centric approach to extensibility and customization.

“Since the beginning, I have referred to the Directus ecosystem as a three-legged stool (which can't wobble): Core, Cloud, and Marketplace,” said Ben Haynes, founder and CEO of Directus. “Now two decades into my Directus journey, we're finally releasing our third leg.”

“What is so important here, is that Directus Core has an ‘80/20 rule’, where we aim to get you up to 80% of your needs out of the box... but intentionally avoid trying to be 100% (a monolith),” said Haynes. “Instead, you achieve that last 20% through extensions and integrations. The Directus Marketplace enables developers to get to 100% even faster than before by leveraging the skills and output of our 100k developer community.”

Innovative Approach to Marketplace Design Directus has adopted a balanced marketplace model that prioritizes both freedom and security. This model supports a diverse range of community-contributed modules and extensions, while implementing essential measures to maintain the platform’s integrity and user trust.

Key Focuses of the Directus Marketplace Beta

A Continuous Commitment to Development and Community Feedback The Directus Marketplace represents the beginning of an ongoing development journey. Directus is committed to enhancing both the extension-building experience and the marketplace functionality, driven by community feedback and engagement.

“The Marketplace is far from done – the Directus Marketplace Beta is the start of a new era for Directus, one where projects are truly customizable, extensible, and composable,” said Rijk van Zanten, co-founder and CTO at Directus. “There’s lots to do - much on the side of the extension-building developer experience, but also on enhancing the Marketplace itself.”

“Some of this is solved by code. Some by having dedicated teams on various parts of administering a Marketplace,” said Zanten. “And, of course, some by the continued growth of and support from our community of extension authors.
